This vintage Chicago Bears photo shows the team’s early roots, with “Papa Bear” George Halas pictured at center in the photo. Halas was backed by entrepreneur A. E. Staley, from the Staley Manufacturing Co., to form the Decatur Staley team in 1919. Halas was instrumental in the start of professional football, and A.E. Staley knew that the team would have more potential for growth in the larger market of Chicago. The team moved to Chicago in 1921 and played as the “Chicago Staleys” for one year. Since they played at Wrigley Field (also home to the Cubs), the team decided to rename the team the “Chicago Bears,” since they reasoned that football players were larger in size than baseball players. This old Bears photo makes a great gift for the Bears fan!
